Police disarm machete-wielding robber – Stephen Betts – Rockland – Camden – Knox – The Herald Gazette

Rockland — Rockland police disarmed a machete-wielding man Thursday morning, Sept. 30 in Rite Aid Pharmacy during a robbery attempt.

Detective Sgt. Chris Young said Joshua Powell, 23, of Rockland was taken into custody and charged with Class A robbery. The case will be referred to the district attorney for likely additional charges, Young said.

Powell entered the store and jumped over the pharmacy counter with the machete, threatened the employees and demanded drugs, Young said. The staff gave Powell drugs – which police would not identify.

A customer who was waiting at the drive-up window of the pharmacy telephoned police who were a block away at the police station. Young and Deputy Police Chief Wally Tower arrived moments later and at gunpoint ordered Powell to get on the floor and drop his weapon. Powell complied, Young said.

One of the customers in the store at the time of the robbery attempt said he was terrified by the incident.

“I was walking down an aisle when this man comes at me, waving a machete,” said Brian Rockett. “I thought I was going to die.”

Rockett said the man was mumbling something but he couldn’t understand the words. The suspect was within a few inches of him and Rockett said he moved fast to get out of the man’s way.

Rockett said he then saw Young pull his gun and disarm the man.

Young came out of the store carrying both the machete and several bottles of medication.

No one was injured, Young said.

The store at Park and Union streets was closed as police continued their investigation.

VillageSoup will provide more information when it becomes available.
