Metro – Methadone clinic gets second chance, will stay in Calgary

July 15, 2009 5:05 a.m.

Second Chance Recovery Clinic doors will remain open in Calgary after overwhelming positive response from Calgarians.

The methadone clinic had announced last week that they would shut their doors permanently in Calgary after being forced out of their current location in Braeside after negative feedback from residences.

“After the weekend and all the positive reports that came in to us, we decided to stick it out and find a place that is suitable for the clinic,” said Bill Leslie, its director.

Leslie said that remaining open will help save people’s lives.

Alberta Health Services is helping Second Chance look for a new location.

Leslie believes that there is a place in Calgary and that the ideal location would be in a light industrial area and not in a residential area.

The location in Braeside will remain open until a new home is found.

Currently, Leslie said that he hopes to have information days for the Braeside community to learn more about the clinic and voice any concerns.

“It’s a small way but it’s a start educate the communities to get them to understand what we are try to do and that their neighbourhood won’t change,” he said.
