U.S. GAO – Methadone-Associated Overdose Deaths: Factors Contributing to Increased Deaths and Efforts to Prevent Them

U.S. GAO – Methadone-Associated Overdose Deaths: Factors Contributing to Increased Deaths and Efforts to Prevent Them.

The third report to unequivically state a rise in the use of prescription methadone for pain (and ignorance about it’s unique chemical properties by it’s users, abusers and prescribers)  is the most significant factor in the rise of methadone overdose deaths in the US-for many reasons that don’t change it’s usefullness in pain treatment, but do make it critical that we educate addicts, doctors and pain patients NOW….as well as a CLEAR OPINION by the panel that prescription drug abuse is on the rise for all opioids and any legislation that is directed solely at the distribution of methadone will only  shift the problem from methadone to other (possibly MORE DANGEROUS) drugs–as we saw happen in with OxyContin.  As doctors became scared to prescribe OxyContin more people started to die from methadone overdoses as it was the only drug available to them AND (because of it’s unique properties) it only causes significant euphoria when mixed with other drugs to enhance the high.  The mix of these drugs is what makes it so dangerous!

How many reports are we going to have to sanction before we actually move on this problem with education strategies that work?  Instead organizations, the senate and advocate groups continue  and pretend that we can stop a drug addict from abusing drugs simply by making them illegal?
