Methadone clinic decision due by week’s end

Thursday, January 22, 2009

LACONIA — After several delays, City Planner Shanna Saunders said she will likely make a decision by Friday whether to grant permission for a methadone outpatient clinic to operate in the O’Shea Industrial Park.

Saunders expected to have made the decision on Tuesday, but said back-and-forth exchanges with Attorney Adele Fulton, who is evaluating the request of Metro Treatment to open the clinic in the former Tangent Tool building on Primrose Drive, were taking longer than expected.

The City Council and Police Chief Mike Moyer as well as many citizens have come out strongly against the clinic proposal. The council also sent a letter to Gov. John Lynch asking him to order a review of outpatient methadone treatment facilities in the state and, in the council’s opinion, their lack of state oversight.

Because the methadone clinic proposal involves fewer than 5,000 cubic feet of space, Saunders can decide the matter herself — she has said on previous occasions that the clinic is a permitted use under city zoning regulations — meaning the proposal does not need to go to the full Planning Board.
