Excessive doses make methadone deadly

September 10, 2008

Has anyone considered the possibility that the upswing in deaths associated with methadone prescribed for pain relief might be related to the fact that until November 2006, the Food and Drug Administration and the drug manufacturers (in their “package insert” directions) recommended a standard pain relief dosage for methadone (up to 80 milligrams a day) that can kill patients who are not tolerant to opiates (“Rising methadone deaths,” Sept. 5)?

And that when, decades too late, the FDA changed those recommended dosage levels markedly (to a ceiling of 30 milligrams a day), it did very little to call attention to that change?Dr. Robert G. NewmanNew York

Thank you, Dr.Newman, for once again taking the time help us fight stigma!
