Gustav Charges Toward Louisiana Coast

Gustav Charges Toward Louisiana Coast.

Last year Jan and I attended a very important national meeting in New Orleans for the “drug policy alliance” which is a group that works to end the harm that comes to addicts because of the “War on Drugs” (national laws that were made in the name of “saving addicts” but usually end up hurting them more).

We took a bus tour of the devastation and the broken homes that once made up the fascinating city.  Under a bridge stood a make shift “town” of tents that held a small village of people still without homes TWO YEARS AFTER the levies broke from Hurricane Katrina.  On the doors of abandoned homes were four numbers-the id number of the searchers group that had searched the home, the number of people found in the home, the number of people taken OUT of the home….and the number of dead left behind.  I personally will NEVER forget those doors-or the tiny christmas tree that stood in the middle of the homeless village under that bridge.

So what does this have to do with us? Well, it reminds us of how easily people are forgotten and how easy it is for us to become those forgotten.  It reminds us that life isn’t fair and that we still have so much work to do.
